The Smart Student’s Guide to Smart Manufacturing by Mike Nager
When people think about careers in manufacturing, they imagine noisy factories with hundreds of workers standing shoulder-to-shoulder doing repetitive work. Who would recommend working at the company that laid off Grandpa and left him without a pension? But Industry 4.0—the revolution of manufacturing created by technology—is not your Grandpa’s manufacturing!
Smart Manufacturing is the modern way of thinking about and producing products. The stodgy, hundred-year-old mass-production paradigm is giving way to Augmented and Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and other new tech to reduce the need for human workers to perform rote tasks. This change is driving a new wave of employment for creative, “think outside the box” people to reimagine what manufacturing for the 21st century looks like.
This book gives students, parents, workforce development committees, and education directors a fresh perspective on manufacturing as a career path that offers a wealth of exciting business opportunities in a changing world. For workers looking to reskill or upskill, this book provides explanations of terminology, discussion topics, even examples of new tech as it’s used in popular movies or shows. If you’re looking for a career that builds the future, a career in Smart Manufacturing may be right for you!

Winds of Skilak: The Continuing Saga of One Couple’s Adventures and Survival in the Alaskan Wilderness by Bonnie Rose Ward
Imagine having to can a whole moose. One thousand pounds of meat, critical to survival through the brutal winter an island in Alaska. And doing it in a home with no electricity, no plumbing, and no refrigeration. For Bonnie Rose Wild and her husband, this is just another ordinary task in an environment that can be unforgiving of mistakes but immensely rewarding to those willing to embrace the work of creating a home in a harsh but beautiful land.
In this sequel, Sam and Bonnie are thriving, building new businesses and continuing to joyfully tackle life on remote, isolated Skilak Lake, where williwaw winds can whip out of nowhere and wicked storms can blow for weeks. Then one of the largest man-made, life-altering, environmental disasters strikes, threatening their livelihood and idyllic life. Can Bonnie and Sam survive, or will Alaska finally win?
From the awe-inspiring beauty of the Northern Lights, to terrifying accidents and strangers, to a Christmas miracle, this is a testament of courage, and inspiration to anyone born with a wild longing in their hearts. Through sorrows and joys, love and loss, God’s hand is always present in their lives as Bonnie shares her chronicle of faith, survival, and beauty in an untamed land few others will ever know.
About the Author:
Bonnie Rose Ward and her husband Sam lived in Alaska for fifteen years, before moving to Sam’s family homestead in West Virginia. Once again, they were wilderness homesteaders, of sorts. Together, they cleared the land, and built another beautiful cabin reminiscent of the homes Sam had built on Caribou Island. The mountainous West Virginia winters can, at times, be quite frigid, though none yet as brutal as those they lived through on Caribou Island. But when the wind begins to gust, and it roars down the mountainside to wail through the valley, Bonnie instinctively turns toward her picture window to check for whitecaps on Skilak Lake.
